Updated: Apr 20, 2023

We are thrilled to announce an exciting new program for Micanopy Academy students for the 2023-24 school year. Our new Civics and Law program will equip students with deep knowledge of the American government and legal system and the skills needed to become active and engaged citizens. We are proud to offer this first-of-its-kind program in the state of Florida to 9th-12th grade students at our tuition-free public charter school.

The Civics and Law program will cover a wide range of topics designed to build upon our school’s 7th grade Civics course and will include politics, case studies, economics, ethics and more. Micanopy Academy teachers Clay and Ann Smith, previous lawyers and Peace Corps volunteers, created the program based on the interest our current students show in the U.S. legal system:

They are looking for answers to practical questions about our rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens. This is an opportunity to honor our students’ desire to learn and provide free access to this vital information.

-Clay Smith, Micanopy Academy Teacher

Micanopy Academy students thrive in our small, close-knit community where they are encouraged to ask questions and take ownership over their learning. The Civics and Law Program will further our mission to provide all students with exceptional learning and creative teaching. Through real world engagements such as mock debates and trials, field trips and internships, students will:

  • Learn about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights

  • Study the three branches of government and how they interact

  • Understand the role of the judiciary in interpreting laws

  • Explore the legal system, including criminal and civil law

  • Discuss contemporary issues in politics and law

  • Participate in debates, mock trials, and other activities that simulate real-world scenarios

Assistant Principal Kristin Walker believes our newest program will help Micanopy Academy students be “better prepared to make informed decisions, advocate for their rights, and contribute positively to their communities.” The course of study will progress as follows:

9th Grade: 1 Semester of Ethics, 1 Semester of Political Science

10th Grade: 1 Semester of Law Studies, 1 Semester of Legal Systems and Concepts

11th Grade: 1 Semester of American Government, 1 Semester of Economics

12th Grade: 1 Year of Constitutional Law Honors (Capstone Course)

If you think this program sounds like a great fit for your budding lawyer, true crime podcast lover or future congressperson, Micanopy Academy is currently enrolling for the 2023-24 school year and we invite interested students to start their journey with us today. Tuition-free!
