Program is first of its kind in Florida high schools

Friday, March 31, 2023: Micanopy, Florida - Micanopy Academy, a tuition-free 6th-12th grade charter school dedicated to providing students with an innovative, well-rounded education, is excited to announce the launch of its new Civics and Law program. Designed to provide students with a comprehensive study of the American government and legal system, the program will help prepare students for success in college, career, and beyond.

As the first such dedicated course of study in Florida, the Civics and Law program will cover a wide range of topics that will build upon the school’s 7th grade Civics course to include politics, case studies, economics, ethics and more. Through real world engagements such as mock debates and trials, field trips and internships, students will deepen their understanding of U.S. law and how it affects their lives.

"Our goal is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to become active and engaged citizens," said Kristin Walker, Assistant Principal of Micanopy Academy. "By understanding how the legal system works, our students will be better prepared to make informed decisions, advocate for their rights, and contribute positively to their communities."

Micanopy Academy teachers Clay and Ann Smith, inspired by their previous careers as lawyers and Peace Corps volunteers, created the program based on the interest their current students show in the U.S. legal system. “They are looking for answers to practical questions about our rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens. This is an opportunity to honor our students’ desire to learn and provide free access to this vital information,” said Clay Smith.

The Civics and Law program is open to current and prospective 9th-12th grade students at Micanopy Academy for the 2023-24 school year. The course of study begins with an in-depth study of ethics and political science, continues with government, law and economics, and concludes with a capstone course in constitutional law honors.

About Micanopy Academy: Micanopy Academy is a 6th-12th grade tuition-free charter school that provides a student-centered education that is defined by expertise, exceptional quality, and compassion. Students interested in an engaging learning experience that will prepare them for a lifetime of active citizenship are encouraged to enroll in the new program.
